Protein Needs and the Problem with All Liquid Diets

There are all kinds of diets, from the all cabbage diet to the all soup diet. In the 80's, there was a high protein, all liquid diet that was very popular, however, there were several problems noted with this plan. A better liquid protein supplement has been found, however, there still remain a number of problems with an all liquid diet of any kind, no matter how nutritious or delicious that the liquid might be. Protein and Vegetarians

There is often great debate over whether or not vegetarians and vegans get enough protein. There are different types of vegetarians, just as there are different types of proteins. For instance, a flexi-tarian is a vegetarian who may occasionally eat meat, typically fish. An ovo-lacto vegetarian is one that does not eat meat of any kind, at any time, but does eat dairy foods and eggs because they do not require killing the animal. A vegan is a person that does not eat or use any product made from or by any kind of animal. Many parents are bewildered when their teens come home and announce that they are going to become vegetarians and may worry that they are not getting enough nutrition with their newfound diet. As long as they are getting enough variety in the foods that they eat, their protein, calcium and other nutrient intakes are surprisingly healthy.

Why Many Fat Free Diets do not Work

Most people understand that it is wise to limit the grams of fat in their daily diet. The dietary reference intake amount for an adult ranges from 20% to 35% [i] of daily calories; or about 44 to 55 grams per day [1]. Since a single slice of pecan pie carries with it 27 grams of fat, and a mere tablespoon of thousand island salad dressing contains 8 grams of fat [ii], it is not surprising to see more and more people checking food labels and "passing over" an order of onion rings [2] as they try to lose, or maintain, inches and pounds.
